Small rooms can feel like a drag. All that stuff and nowhere to put it! The good thing is with the right styling techniques a small room can end up looking cozy (instead of cramped). You do need to keep a few things in mind though if you are seeking to make the room look bigger. Depending on the room, though, you may need to contact an expert if you are doing heavy remodeling. For example, if you are tackling a small bathroom, make sure you contact a plumber and other experts about what you need to do to get a big job done right. But here’s a few things you can do now with that small space, no matter what room it is.
1) Don’t forget about the ceiling – and the floor.
One interesting technique for making a small room look bigger is utilizing painting techniques to trick the mind. For example, paint the floor a light color or use flooring that is light colored. Dark colors can absorb light which can make the room feel much smaller but lighter colors can brighten things up a bit. As for the ceiling, paint that too! Potentially add wallpaper with an interesting design or pop of color because that will draw people’s eyes upward.
2) Don’t overload the room with junk.
One sure way of making a cozy room feel cramped is an overload of junk. Whether’s it’s furniture or objects of the house you insist you need, keep it to a minimum. Cut back on how much you are storing in this space and utilize other areas of the home or apartment to store things, if you can. If you don’t have extra storage, you may need to consider heavy duty decluttering if you want to really make the space feel more livable.
3) Keep the room as open as possible.
One important way of opening up the space is utilizing the natural light and natural openings in the room. Whether it’s hallways, doorways, or windows, make sure these areas not obstructed from view. Keep them open and cleared out from the furniture and clutter in the room and that will make your room appear much bigger.
4) Use mirrors.
It seems to be the classic trick but mirrors really do help make a space look better. Purchase a large mirror that can reflect the room. Potentially purchase a framed mirror to add an element of design. Consider other reflective furniture too like a mirrored coffee table or lamp, for example.
5) Use furniture as storage pieces.
Storage will become your new best friend in a small room. So make sure you have furniture that can double as a storage area, such as ottomans or coffee tables with extra hidden storage. Also, don’t forget about shelves too for storing items. Most shelves you can install yourself, too. And once installed, place decorative boxes along the wall which can work as extra storage pieces.
