5 Characteristics of Futons and Futon Mattresses

Futons and futon mattresses have come a long way. Nowadays, some of the better companies offer a variety of futons and mattresses that it is easier to pick a suitable one. In the past, mattresses were a little on the firm side. While there is nothing wrong in this, it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. You can now get mattresses that are a lot more softer.

There are all kinds of covers available in different colours and textures. The futon is a versatile piece of furniture and is great for apartments. Let’s take a closer look at futons and futon mattresses.

1. Great When Visitors Stay

Since futons can be both a couch and a bed, you can comfortably put up a couple of friends if they have to spend the night. There are sofa beds as well, but these take up more room than a futon. This isn’t really helpful if you have a small space. Futons can fit the bill perfectly.

2. Healthy Support

Sometimes, traditional mattresses are not the best for someone who has health issues. Chiropractors have suggested using futons to sleep on, for those who have back problems. A futon is more than capable of offering good support for people with back problems.

With people and businesses becoming more concerned about environmental issues, some of these companies don’t use chemicals and dyes and only use natural materials only. The sleeping environment becomes a healthier one. Some futons are also thought to prevent asthma or allergy attacks.

3. Comfort Factor

As mentioned, futons used to be pretty stiff and some people found it quite uncomfortable. They basically became a ‘bachelor’ thing. Now though, they have become much more comfortable in general. They can be quite soft if this is what you prefer. It’s no longer a popular choice just with the bachelors. Many other people choose to get it as well. There are brands that offer not only comfortable futons but make them look pretty stylish as well. It has grown more versatile, making it a popular and practical choice.

4. Longer Lasting

Futons tend to last longer. Perhaps it is because they are used sparingly. Normal mattresses on a bed should be changed every 8 to 10 years. However, with futons, they can last longer. This is mainly due to the concept itself. Futons in general can serve two purposes. As a result, they were built to last a long time. This is one reason why they will outlast a normal bed mattress.

5. Choosing The Right One

Before you decide to get one, you need to consider how it will be used. Will it be used sparingly? Do you often have people sleep over? Knowing some of this information will allow you to make smarter choices. You can pick darker colours with durability in mind if people come over a lot. Lighter colours may be better if you only have people come over on rare occasions.

Consider thickness and comfort level, either for yourself or your guests. Make sure that the mattress fits the frame. Sometimes, mattresses can hang over and you wouldn’t want that. By looking at a few considerations, it would be easier to make the right choice.
