9 Steps to Pack a Storage Container Properly

Whether you are getting ready to move or simply need to put some of your stuff into storage for some time, a storage container is always a great option.

But to make the most of your container while ensuring your belongings are safe inside, you must learn how to properly pack a storage container.

1. Start with the right size of storage container

Storage containers come in different sizes, so if you did not rent one already, take a moment to determine the size you need. Of course, if you only want to put a few pieces of furniture into storage, you will need a much smaller storage container than if you want to store all your belongings until your new house is ready.

To ensure you choose the right size, don’t hesitate to ask a few questions about your storage container rental company.

2. Make a list of everything you are about to store

Once you have the right container size, don’t just pack it with your belongings without considering it. A detailed list of everything you will put into storage is always a good idea.

You can trust your storage container to keep your belongings safe. But if something happens, and you want to make a claim, you must know exactly what was inside your container.

3. Protect fragile items before packing them

If you want to pack fragile items in your storage container, wrap them in newspaper or bubble wrap before placing them in boxes. Even though storage containers are designed to keep your belongings safe during transit, taking extra precautions never hurts.

As for wood furniture, you can cover them with old blankets or with protective padding before placing them inside your storage container. This will keep them from accidentally getting scratched.

4. Pack the heaviest items at the bottom of your storage container

Pieces of furniture and heavy boxes should be packed first in your storage container. But don’t start by putting heavy stuff all over the floor of your container, as you would then have to step on boxes to reach the back of it.

Instead, work from the back to the front of your container, packing lighter items on top of heavy items.

And try to leave a small aisle that will allow you to reach the back if needed.

5. Pack your furniture vertically

Packaging your furniture vertically is a good idea, as it will take up less space in your container. Mattresses, for example, should be placed vertically near the walls of your storage container.

You could pack a sofa on its side, and a bookcase would be placed vertically. As for chairs, see if you can stack them.

And if you need to save some space, you might want to disassemble some parts of your furniture.

6. Try to distribute the weight evenly

Try to distribute the weight of the items you are packing evenly across your storage container. For example, it’s not a good idea to place all your heavy appliances and furniture at the back of your container and pack only light items at the front.

Instead, pack your heavy items throughout your unit with light items on top.

7. Make good use of bookcases and drawers

You can make good use of bookcases, shelving units, and pieces of furniture with drawers by packing small items.

For example, if you have a nice collection of mugs, you can wrap them individually and then pack them inside a cupboard instead of packing them inside a box and then placing this box on top of your cupboard.

This tip will help you maximize the space inside your storage container.

8. Slide fragile items close to the walls of your storage container

If you have thin and fragile items like mirrors and very large picture frames, you can slide them between the walls of your storage container and the heavy items you have packed. This will help protect them and keep them upright.

Of course, you can also wrap these items with bubble wrap or towels to ensure they don’t get scratched.

9. Stack boxes to the ceiling

As you pack your storage container, stack your boxes up to the ceiling if you have enough. Just ensure each stack is steady and won’t fall as soon as the container moves.

Finally, if you are packing this container for a move, remember to pack items such as toiletries, cooking supplies, towels, and clothing at the front so you can easily access them.
