5 Maintenance Tips for Wooden Floors

Installing decent wood flooring can be a very expensive undertaking depending on the amount of square footage you are opting to cover. But once those costs are covered and the renovations are done, you are left with an amazing looking room with a homey feel that you can take great pride in. This is why you want to maintain your wooden floors and keep them looking as new as the day you laid them out.

1. Use appropriate cleaning products on your wooden floors

When cleaning your wooden floors, it is important to avoid using tile cleaner or vinyl floor cleaner since it is too abrasive for the wooden floor fibres and may strip away at the floor’s wax and varnish. Instead, you will want to use a cleaning product specific to wooden floors. Another quick fix is to mix a cup of vinegar with a gallon of water and use it sparingly over the wooden floor with a mop. Avoid using too much water as it will also damage the floors eventually.

2. Prevent outside dirt from getting on the floors

Outside dirt and debris can damage the floor over time, so it is important to avoid tracking dirt into the house. Using throw rugs around doors can provide a small buffer from dirt exposure, though you should also get in the habit of telling guests to remove their outdoor shoes and avoid tracking dirt and mud into the house. Putting rugs around water sources can prevent water from soaking into the floor and causing further damage.

3. Use furniture protection to prevent scuffs

Your furniture can have sharp angles and legs that can cause scuffs and marks on your wooden floors over time. A quick fix to prevent these scuffs is to put felt covers on the furniture legs to protect your wood flooring. Also, any time you have to move furniture, it is better to lift the furniture rather than push or drag it across the floor where it can cause scratches.

4. Wear proper footwear

Keeping your wooden floors properly maintained can be as easy as wearing the proper footwear around in your house. Ideally, you should avoid wearing shoes in the house or at least have an extra pair of indoor shoes to avoid tracking in dirt and debris. As long as you avoid wearing your regular outdoor shoes in the house. The worst thing you can do is wear sharp high heels on wooden floors since the stiletto-like heel will exert a lot of pressure per inch on the floor.

5. Avoid using soaked mops and steam cleaning

If you plan to mop your wooden floors, use a very sparing amount of water so as to not cause dimpling or water damage. The same problem can happen if you use a steam mop on a hardwood floor, it can be very damaging towards maintaining a proper floor.
