Step #1: Decide where to paint the accent wall.

Are you looking to paint an accent wall in your living room? Or do you plan to paint another room in the house? Whichever room you choose, pay special attention to which wall you want to be your focal point. For example, if you want to paint an accent wall in your living room, think about which wall you want to put your sofa against. That would make for a great choice for your accent wall.

In the same vein, if you’re looking to do an accent wall in your bedroom, think of the wall you’ll be placing your bed against. A good tip is to use the wall that first grabs your attention when you enter a room. This wall will make the biggest impact.

Step #2: Choose the perfect paint colour.

Now for the fun part: choosing your paint colour for the accent wall. You might opt to go big and go for a bold colour like dark green or dark blue. Be sure to think long and hard before choosing a colour. Remember that this colour is going to grab your attention every time you walk into the room. You’ll want to make sure it’s a colour you really like.

Also, consider the furniture and décor pieces in the room. You’ll want to make sure the paint colour you choose matches the palette of the room. Make sure the colour stands out from the colour of the rest of the walls for maximum effect.

Step #3: Prep the accent wall for paint.

Now that you know which accent wall to paint and you have your colour picked out, it’s time to get to work. Take everything down that’s currently on that wall, including frames and other décor pieces. Next, you’ll need to remove any screws and nails then patch and sand all of the holes. Remove anything else that’s on the wall, like outlet covers.

Before you paint an accent wall, make sure any tape that may have been on your wall is removed. It’s also important to ensure that any furniture left in the room is covered and moved at least five feet away from the wall.

Step #4: Use painter’s tape to define borders.

Next up: tape off the wall with painter’s tape. Use painter’s tape to tape off around the baseboards, doors, and outlets. Make sure the tape is really stuck on the wall to ensure it doesn’t come off while you’re painting.

This will keep you from getting paint on your borders or anywhere else that you don’t want it. Once you’re done painting and the paint has dried, you can remove the tape and should be left with clean crisp lines.

Step #5: Protect your floors from paint.

The last thing you want to do is get paint on your floors while you’re painting an accent wall. You’ll need to take precautions to ensure this doesn’t happen. Grab whatever you have that you wouldn’t mind getting paint on, such as old towels or blankets.

You can also purchase a sheet of plastic from the hardware store that you can apply to the floor. Whatever material you plan on using, tape it to the wall using masking tape to ensure it doesn’t move while you paint the wall.

Step #6: Paint the accent wall.

Now that your wall and floors are ready to go, you can finally learn how to paint an accent wall. Open the paint can up, stir it well, and pour in into the roller pan. Use a roller to paint the majority of the wall then go in with a paintbrush to do the edges of the wall, around the ceiling, and around the baseboards.

It’s always a good idea to have a wet rag around, so you can quickly wipe at any spots that get on the ceiling or anywhere else. Start by painting the primer coat and then go in with your main paint colour. Always ensure that you give the paint three hours to dry between coats and then voila!
