7 Activities You Should Do Before Your Movers Arrive

Moving day is always a big day, and many things can go wrong if you are not well-prepared. Of course, the competent movers you have hired will be working hard to ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible, but there is still a lot you will have to do.

Be aware of these 7 things you should do before your movers arrive.

1. Consider getting some additional insurance coverage

You can get some additional insurance coverage from your movers if you want to. This might be a good idea if you have some items that have a high sentimental, or monetary value.

Even if you know you can trust your movers to be careful when they handle your most precious belongings, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

2. Ask your movers about what items they can’t move

There are some items that movers can’t move, such as paint, motor oils, propane tanks, chemicals, and cleaning supplies. They probably won’t move your house plants and pets either.

Be aware of what they can and can’t move, so you can get rid of those hazardous items, or move them in your car.

3. Get rid of the clutter

Moving is a perfect opportunity for getting rid of the things you don’t use, don’t need or don’t want anymore. There is no reason to move these items to your new home.

Sell, donate, or throw away everything you don’t want anymore, so you will only be moving the things you really want to keep.

4. Do some cleaning

Getting ready for a move is always a good time to do some cleaning and to organize your belongings before you pack them.

Make sure everything you own is clean and in good condition. Empty your drawers and your bookshelves, and clean your appliances after unplugging and emptying them.

5. Pack your belongings

Your movers will know how to protect and pack your furniture and the large items you own. However, for a more efficient move, it will be up to you to pack everything else you own before moving day.

Don’t hesitate to put labels on each box, and to add some instructions for your movers.

6. Measure your doors and your large pieces of furniture

Before your movers arrive, make sure to measure your doors, corridors and staircases, as well as your large pieces of furniture.

Your movers will appreciate it if you can tell them the best route to take your furniture out of your home, and which pieces will need to be disassembled.

7. Prepare your house for the arrival of the movers

Finally, be sure to prepare your house before your movers arrive. Use doormats, and cover your floors and your carpets to protect them.

Remove doors from their hinges if you think it will be necessary, and protect your door frames and the corners of your walls with corner guards or foam pads.
